Is it just me who finds my hair is much shinier in winter? I guess the heat, humidity, air con, salt, chlorine, frequent washing and drying during the summer months all play a part?!
So on investigation, it turns out shiny hair is due to the reflection of light from the hair strands, so the smoother the cuticle on top is, the more it will reflect light and the shinier your hair will be. In order to smooth the cuticles you need a really good conditioner and the more you condition and treat, the better the shine. Sounds straight forward enough but it doesn’t always work that way for me. I have even heard that conditioners should be used not only after shampooing, but also before, for double results!
Well personally, I simply don’t have the time, nor the inclination, for double conditioning, and with so many hundreds of ‘promise to make your hair shiny instantly’ products out there, I have decided to test a much simpler, more natural and indeed economical solution to take me through to Autumn.
2oz plain yogurt
1/2 oz olive oil
Teaspoon of honey
1/2 ripe avocado
Whisk all together in a processor and keep in fridge until required. Rub through hair from scalp to tip and leave for 5-10 minutes wrapped in a towel. Then wash off thoroughly with normal shampoo and conditioner.
So, nature knows best right? If you have some time this weekend…….let me know the results…. 🙂
